With talks of a “double dip” recession and the UK economic recovery seemingly fragile, it would be easy for businesses to be downbeat and pessimistic about their immediate and medium term outlook. Whilst businesses are certainly not spending money without justification, HR Smart Ltd has noted that businesses are still willing to spend their money on value-for-money Human Resources advice. More...

Here at HR Smart, we wish each and every one of you a very Happy Christmas and a prosperous 2010.

However, before we leave 2009 behind and enter full steam ahead into the party season, as an employer you may want to heed our words of warning.

At this time of year, many companies endeavour to spread the Christmas cheer by undertaking Secret Santa. The theory is simply that each employee selects a colleague, in secret, to buy a small, often “jokey”, Christmas gift of small monetary value, which is then given during the Christmas lunch or evening party. More...
Related links:

HR Aims For more information on how we strive to help your business, check out our HR Aims.

The appraisal process is often seen by managers and employees as either a necessary evil or a good way to criticise the Company. This is all very well, but obviously not a very constructive approach and one that will mean the Company will almost certainly suffer as a result.

The best way approach the appraisal is to take the following steps:-

Make sure the scheme is well thought out and set up. More...
Related links:

HR Services Check out all of our HR Services.

When an employee takes employment tribunal action against their employer, Question 5 on the ET1 form under Unfair Dismissal or constructive dismissal is "What does the Employee Want if their case is successful?” The available options are:

To get their old job back with compensation (re-instatement)
To get another job with the same employer with compensation (re-engagement)
    Compensation only

In this day of higher levels of dismissal claims being taking through the Employment Tribunal Process, re-instatement and re-engagement are realistic resolutions that can be enforced as the outcome. More...
Related links:

More Employment Tribunal News Read some more news bought back from an employment tribunal by our human resources consultants

HR services Read about our human resources services and how we can help your HR department

Redundancies in the Recession

In these times of recession, redundancy seems to be one of the most widely used words by all tiers of management at the moment. Having been through a number of redundancy programmes as a manager, I can say that this is a very challenging time for SME businesses. There are a few things to remember when considering a redundancy programme to make the process as smooth and painless as possible for all concerned:-
- Do follow the Statutory Redundancy process as set out by current Employment legislation
- Do make sure that if you have limited redundancy experience, you engage a qualified professional to advise you
- Do make sure the employees being selected for redundancy are the right ones for the business and not for personal reasons
- Do ensure that the business continuity will not be affected by losing key people by mistake or misunderstanding
- Do communicate the future business plan with existing employees as soon as possible after the redundancy process has been completed
- Don't select "First In Frst out"
- Don't let rumour and hearsay disrupt staff morale
